I remember fondly the time my parent's spent making this and how they doubled and tripled the recipe for family gatherings. To non-Mennonites the idea of having these with watermelon strikes them as very strange--Watermelon and doughnuts??!!??

  2. Prepare 1 cup of whipping cream.
  3. Prepare 2 of eggs.
  4. You need 1/4 cup of butter or margarine.
  5. You need 1/2 tsp of salt.
  6. It's 1 pinch of baking powder.
  7. You need 2 cup of all purpose flour.

The yield of this recipe varies greatly depending on the thickness of the rolled dough and size of cookie cutters used. Wrap the dough up and refrigerate it for a few hours. Letting it sit makes it so much easier to roll out. Rolling it thin, makes a crisper roll kuchen and leaving it a bit thicker makes for a softer.

  1. Preheat oil for deep frying between 360-375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Mix all ingredients EXCEPT flour.
  3. Add in flour until mixture is sticky (just enough to be rolled). Approximately 2 cups, but less is more.
  4. Sprinkle counter with flour and roll out dough in thin sheets.
  5. Cut rolled dough into squares with two small slits cut out of centers (this helps them stabilize in oil).
  6. Fry squares for 30 seconds or so flipping once.
  7. Serve with side of fresh fruit, or try stuffing with strawberries before frying!.
